Beith welcomes referendum announcement
Welcoming the announcement by Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott that areferendum will be held on a regional assembly for the North East,Berwick MP Alan Beith said:
“Now the people of the North will have the opportunity to build a strongdemocratic assembly to fight for the North and hold to account theregional institutions which already have so much power over us.
“An assembly will mean that key decisions that affect us can be made inthe North, by the North, for the North.
“Liberal Democrats will be working hard for a Yes vote. It will be astraightforward vote no longer complicated by local government issues,thanks to changes won by the Lib Dems as the referendum legislationpassed through Parliament. In Northumberland and Durham, voters willhave a second question on local government, giving them real choice forthe first time.”
