Angela Watkinson MP praises The Farm Wildlife Advisory Group
1 June 2009
The Farm Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG) celebrates 40 years of active co-operation between farmers and the creatures that live side by side with them in the countryside.
Angela said, "Our London Borough of Havering consists of the Urban built up Area and thousands of acres of prime agricultural land, in fact some 50% of its land mass. For 40 years FWAG (not to be confused with wives and girlfriends of our football heroes) has been encouraging the set aside of strips of land down the sides of fields (known as "headland") and thickening of hedges in a five year cycle, so that wildlife can feed and breed side by side with food production for we humans."
FWAG boss Andy Ormiston launched a 40th Anniversary campaign "Do one thing for wildlife". "Even the simplest of actions, such as planting an area of wildflower seeds or putting up a bird box, can have longstanding beneficial effects", he said.
