Which? responds to DoH report on dramatic rise in obesity rates by 2010

24 August 2006

Responding to reports that Department of Health figures due out tomorrow will forecast a dramatic rise in obesity rates by 2010, Michelle Smyth, food campaigner for Which? comments:

“This forecast paints a worrying picture for future generations and show that, more than ever, what we need is clear and honest food labelling to help make the healthy choice the easy choice.

“Our research shows that the Food Standards Agency’s traffic light labelling system should be adopted by all manufacturers and retailers. This would allow consumers to make informed and healthy decisions, whichever supermarket they visit or brand they buy.

“To reverse the tide of obesity, the government also needs to address the underhand marketing techniques which are used to encourage children to eat junk food.

“With so many mixed messages it’s no wonder that consumers find it difficult to eat healthily. The government has gone some way to improving the situation, particularly with school food, but has much further to go.”
