Voting open for The Good Food Guide Restaurant of the Year

The Good Food Guide has opened voting for its Restaurant of the Year award, which recognises excellence and good service at restaurants, pubs and cafés across the UK.

Last year, more than 20,000 members of the public voted for their favourite independently owned place to eat out, and ramsons in Ramsbottom beat off strong competition to be named overall winner.

Nominations can be made online at www.which.co.uk/gfgaward or by sending in a postcard, available in restaurants from Monday 2 March 2009 until Friday 15 May 2009.

Ten regional winners will be announced at the end of May and the overall winner of The Good Food Guide Restaurant of the Year award will be announced at a ceremony at the British Museum in June.

Elizabeth Carter, Consultant Editor, The Good Food Guide, says:

"Independents can't always compete with the cut-price deals that the big chains are offering, but they can be exceptional value for money. Diners need to support their favourite independent restaurants if they want them to survive the downturn.

"This award champions restaurants that combine fresh, local produce with skilful cooking and exemplary service, to create a really enjoyable dining experience."

Chris Johnson, owner of ramsons, which won the award last year, says:
