Voice Scotland statement on framework for progress on education

Voice: the union for education professionals, which represents teachers, education support staff and childcarers across Scotland and the UK, has commented on the Scottish government's "Framework for Progress on Education" (http://www.scotland.gov.uk/News/Releases/2009/12/11081922)

Maureen Laing, Voice's senior professional officer for Scotland, said: "Both a reduction in class sizes and extending free school meals provision are important commitments made by the government.

"Voice has always campaigned for a reduction in class sizes and maintains that this is a priority. At present, we have 80% of probationer teachers without full-time permanent posts – a great waste of talent – and every effort should be made to utilise their talent and the investment made in them to reduce class sizes as much as is possible.

"Free schools meals for every child is an admirable goal to strive for, but a delay in extending the provision to those children who do not live in deprived areas will not have the same impact as retaining the larger classes. Any delay in extending free school meals provision should be a short-term measure."
