Voice outraged by end of SSSNB and insult to school support staff

28 October 2010

Voice: the union for education professionals has expressed its outrage at the news (28 October 2010) that the Education Secretary has announced the abolition of the School Support Staff Negotiating Body (SSSNB).

General secretary Philip Parkin said: "This is outrageous. According to the Government's Review of Public Bodies only three weeks ago on 14 October, the future of the SSSNB was 'under consideration – subject to further discussions with employer and union representatives'. What happened to the 'consideration’ and 'discussions'?

"Scrapping the SSSNB is hugely disappointing and an insult to our dedicated school support staff, who deserve higher pay and a proper pay and careers structure.

"Voice had called for the Body to be reformed as a pay and conditions review body when its work to construct a national scheme of pay and conditions for support staff was complete, along the lines of the STRB (School Teachers’ Review Body).

"Teachers have an independent pay review body so why not their support staff colleagues?"
