Voice comments on spending announcement

24 May 2010

Voice: the union for education professionals has commented on the government's announcement on spending (24 May 2010).

General secretary Philip Parkin said "We are pleased that the government has made a commitment to protect spending for 2010-11 on schools, Sure Start and 16-19 education, and that this has been made without the expected bonfire of the quangos.

"However, we are very disappointed by the cuts to university places at a time of rising demand for university education – this is not exactly investing in the future.

"Lurking behind the headlines about protecting frontline school services are the cuts to school support funds. These will impact on school transport – at a time when parents are being encouraged not to drive their children to school for the sake of the planet and our congested roads – and on the ability of local authorities to deliver education services. This makes us fear for the future. ‘Re-shape' local authorities' budgets will be translated into ‘cut'.

"Reduced budgets for the National College for Leadership and Children's Services, the Children's Workforce Development Council and the Training and Development Agency for Schools will inevitably affect their ability to provide key services and so will impact on the career development of head teachers, early years professionals and teachers when their training is more important than ever.

"As Chancellors do, Mr Osborne is giving with one hand and taking away with the other."
