VELUX Supports Calls For Retrofit Scheme

1 April 2009

Kevin Brennan, Head of Sustainability, VELUX Company Ltd, responds to the call from the Existing Homes Alliance for the chancellor, Alistair Darling to use this month's Budget to announce further financial support for schemes to make existing homes more energy efficient:

"Further financial support for schemes to make existing homes more energy efficient is essential if we are to make any significant headway into reducing the carbon emissions released by our homes.

"At a recent parliamentary roundtable on sustainable housing, hosted by VELUX, panellists were united in the belief that the retrofitting of eco technologies across the UK's existing housing stock could hold the key to significantly reducing our carbon emissions. While new homes come under increasingly strict eco criteria, it is the 25 million existing homes where the greatest improvements could and should be made.

"To make the widespread retrofitting of eco technologies a reality, we need to see the introduction of meaningful financial incentives. Further, we need to work on raising consumer awareness and an official accreditation scheme to assist homeowners when installing measures such as solar thermal into their homes."
