Vantastic idea by Camden Council

Residents in Camden are being asked to give their views on plans to introduce a new bigger and better ride-share scheme for the borough.

The new mini-van-sharing scheme would provide the first pay-as-you-drive mini-vans in Camden.

Camden Council is now consulting local residents on proposals to provide five parking spaces for the van-share scheme across the borough.

This new scheme is a variation on car clubs already operating in the borough, which offer an alternative to owning a private car.

The van-share provides a larger vehicle for more flexible use such as family days out or taking groups on business trips.

By reducing the number of cars on the road we are able to cut CO2 and air polluting emissions and reduce the borough’s carbon footprint - it can also reduce parking pressures.

Studies have shown that one car club vehicle can replace between four and eight privately-owned vehicles.

Cllr Mike Greene, Executive Member for the Environment, said: “Residents and community groups will be able to come together to help the environment under new proposals to introduce the first mini-van scheme in Camden. More people sharing vehicles means fewer vehicles on the roads and that’s good news for the environment.”

The shared van would be a Volkswagen transporter.

If agreed, proposals for the new parking spaces will only allow vans to park in the specially marked bays.

Work to create the spaces would then be carried out between September and March 2009 and is funded by Transport for London.

The five new spaces would be in Haverstock Hill, Blackburn Road, Castlehaven Road, Ossulston Street and Percy Street. The consultation will run between 4 June and 2 July. Consultation packs will be posted out to residents. The form can also be viewed on-line and printed off.
