Unite welcomes go-ahead for new nuclear power station on Anglesey

Unite, the largest union in Wales, today (Tuesday, 30 March) welcomed the government's announcement that a new nuclear power station will be built at Wylfa on the Isle of Anglesey.

Unite’s Welsh Regional Secretary Andy Richards said: 'This is very good news for the employment opportunities and future economic prosperity of Anglesey and North Wales.'

'I would like to pay special tribute to Ynys Mon MP, Albert Owen for his long and sustained campaign and hard work in securing Wylfa B for the region.'

Unite expects that the building of the nuclear power station will create 3,000 jobs during its construction period and will then need 1,000 staff to run it. Construction is due to start next year.

This plant will replace the existing Wylfa A power station which will start decommissioning in 2012.
