Unite presses government on the future of Coryton

Unite has held a meeting for union members at the Coryton refinery to update them on the current situation regarding the refinery.

Senior officials from Unite also met with Charles Hendry, minister of state for the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) ,earlier in the day (26 January 2012).

Unite has called on the government to press administrators PWC to do everything possible to raise the necessary finance for the refinery and find a buyer which is in the national interest. Safeguarding up to 1,000 jobs at the refinery must be a prime concern said the union.

Unite will be in constant contact with the government to ensure the smooth running of the refinery while in administration.

Unite national officer, Linda McCulloch, said: "We have pressed the government to ensure PWC raises the necessary finance for the refinery and finds a buyer which is in the UK's national interest. Safeguarding jobs at the refinery must be a prime concern.

"Coryton is too important to be left to the vagaries of the market. The government must keep oversight over the process and, if necessary, intervene in the national interest.

"Unite is in constant contact with the government and the administrator. Our members have been doing a fantastic job. The workforce remains dedicated to keeping the site open and their commitment deserves recognition."
