Unite members at defence manufacturer Selex Galileo to strike

Hundreds of Unite members at Selex Galileo, which manufacture radars, lasers and other specialist equipment for the Typhoon fighter aircraft, have voted to take strike action over pay.

Despite enjoying an extremely profitable year the company has offered 2.5 per cent, which union leaders described as "insulting and unfair".

Unite members, who voted 61 per cent in favour of strike, now plan to commence industrial action across the four Selex Galileo plants in Basildon, Edinburgh, Luton and Southampton in their fight to secure a better pay rise.

The 24 hour action will begin at 7am on Wednesday, 8th December. This will be repeated on the 15th and 22nd December and then on Thursday, 5th January 2012.

Unite national officer for aerospace and shipbuilding, Ian Waddell, said:"We have done everything possible to try and reach a fair pay settlement with Selex Galileo at a time when our members are feeling the squeeze through high inflation and rocketing fuel bills.

“Meanwhile, Selex Galileo is enjoying boom times, making massive profits on the backs of our members and the highly skilled work they carry out. The company's refusal to share a decent slice of the profit with our members is insulting and unfair.”

Unite balloted over 400 members across four sites in Basildon, Edinburgh, Luton and Southampton.
