Unite gives 'sanctuary' to the Occupy Cardiff Action Group

21 November 2011

Unite, the largest union in the country, has given 'sanctuary' to the Occupy Cardiff Action Group whose members have now pitched their tents at the union's Cardiff offices.

The 20-strong group with eight tents have been camped out on the lawn of Unite's Cathedral Street office since Saturday (19 November), following Unite's claims that they have been harassed by police.

Unite regional secretary for Wales, Andy Richards said: 'Following days of harassment by the police for simply engaging in a peaceful protest against the savage cuts being inflicted upon the people of Britain by the coalition government in Westminster, this group have pitched their tents on the lawn of Unite regional office in Cardiff with our permission.'

'The group is doing no harm and are welcome to stay for as long as they wish to peacefully publicise a campaign which our union itself is heavily engaged in, on behalf of the people of Wales.'

'I am sure that they will also wish to return the compliment to Unite and join with us on the Wales TUC march and rally in Cardiff on 30 November in protest at the onslaught on public sector pensions.'
