Union campaign website increases Ken Livingstone's online advantage

Ken Livingstone's bid to become London Mayor was given a further boost as Unite the union launches its own cutting edge online tool at www.Unite4Ken.com.

The launch follows the success of Ken Livingstone's campaign networking website www.YourKen.org

The new website features a cutting-edge online phone bank, which enables peer-to-peer contact so that Unite members can call each other from their own home or at organised sessions, talk through the issues that matter to them and mobilise for a Ken Livingstone victory next May. Unite has 150,000 members is London.

The technology involved means that members can call those who are likely to share their concerns - bus workers can call fellow bus workers, members in Bexley can call other members in Bexley.
This type of focused peer-to-peer communication has proven a success at building grassroots movements and winning campaigns.

Steve Hart, Unite's Political Director said:

"Hard-pressed Unite members in London face cuts in services and police, falling living standards, fare rises and job cuts. Londoners need a Mayor who will stand up for them, not like Johnson - an outrider for Tory cuts and tax cuts for the rich.

"In what will probably be the most extensive and advanced election campaign by a trade union for a long time, we are determined to ensure that Unite's 150,000 members in London play a decisive role in a Ken Livingstone victory. Unite will be using people power and the latest technology to campaign for Ken Livingstone."

Ken Livingstone said:

"This is about trade unions recognising that London is less well-off and less safe under Conservative policies and doing something practical about changing that for the better. Boris Johnson hasn't put London first and meets bankers more than the police - whereas I'm pleased to have the organisations of ordinary Londoners talking to fellow members about a fairer alternative. Unite members in workplaces from bus garages to hospitals talking about our campaign will help build our grassroots campaign."
