UK FOOD LABELS MOST COMPREHENSIVE IN EU

The BRC has today welcomed the results of a European Commission study on nutrition labelling, that found products in the UK to be the most comprehensively labelled of those surveyed in the EU.

The study was undertaken to establish the current extent of tabular nutrition labelling throughout the EU, looking at the impact mandatory labelling would have and to see if mandatory labelling is in fact necessary.

The study showed the UK had the highest existing prevalence of nutrition labelling. 'The power of retailers to shape the range of products which are nutrition labelled is clearly demonstrated in the UK' it pointed out.

Of the EU member states participating in the survey, the most comprehensive labelling was found in the UK with 75% of all products surveyed labelled, followed by Spain (54%), Germany (50%) and Poland (41%).

BRC Director General, Kevin Hawkins says: "UK food retailers have led the way in providing clear and helpful nutrition information on food labels. This has been in response to consumer needs and demands, and is well in excess of current legal requirements.

"While nutrition labelling can help to tackle the problem of poor nutrition and obesity, it is crucial that this is combined with education on healthy lifestyles; including clear advice about the contribution that all foods make to a healthy diet and the importance of physical activity."
