UK food and drink companies continue to make water savings

3 October 2011

Today sees the launch of the third annual report of the Federation House Commitment - the water reduction initiative launched in 2008 by the Food and Drink Federation (FDF), which states that in 2010, the 59 signatories of the Commitment, which is now managed by WRAP, reduced their water use by 1.3 million m3 per annum compared to 2007 – a reduction of 5.3%.

Andrew Kuyk, FDF Director of Sustainability and Competitiveness, said: “The Federation House Commitment is a core part of FDF's Five-fold Environmental Ambition and the excellent 2010 result is an important milestone in our aim to achieve a significant reductions in water use to help reduce stress on the nation's water supplies and to contribute to the industry-wide target to reduce water use by 20% by 2020 compared to 2007.

“We are also pleased with the new services now offered under the FHC which includes one-to-one direct on-site support and new technical working groups, providing additional benefits to FHC signatories to help them reduce water use further.

“We look forward to the continued success of the FHC and hope that more companies will come to see the real benefits of participation and seek to join this successful programme.”

Notes:

Working in partnership with former government-funded body Envirowise, FDF launched the Federation House Commitment (FHC) in January 2008. Open to all companies in the food and drink manufacturing sector, it sets out, in a landmark agreement, a process for food and drink manufacturing companies to work in a systematic way towards improving their water efficiency. The full 2011 progress report and further information on the FHC can be found at:

The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) is the voice of the food and drink manufacturing industry – the UK's largest manufacturing sector. For more information about FDF and the industry we represent visit: www.fdf.org.uk

The Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) took over management of the FHC in 2010.
The Food and Drink Federation's ambition to reduce water use is part of its Five-fold Environmental Ambition which was launched in 2007. It is through the FHC that FDF members are working towards achieving an industry-wide target to reduce water use by 20% by 2020 compared to a 2007. The key elements of the Commitment are: the development of a 2007 baseline of water use for individual signatories and for the Commitment as a whole; assessment of water use at each participating company's manufacturing sites; the development of site specific action plans to reduce water use; implementation of action plans; and annual reporting on water and cost savings.
