THIRD MAN BANNED FROM CAUSING TROUBLE IN CAMDEN

23/11/05

A third man has been banned from Inverness Street and the surrounding area after a court found he had harassed and intimidated members of the public.

Yahya Saleh, aged 18, was given an anti-social behaviour order (ASBO) at Marylebone Road Magistrate’s Court on Thursday 17 November. His ban comes hot on the heels of two other ASBOs granted earlier this month for his friends who were harassing residents in the area.

Camden Council and the police applied for the order to protect Camden Town residents who had complained about groups of young men causing problems.

Under the terms of the ASBO, he is banned from an area of Camden Town including Inverness Street, Arlington Road and Juniper Crescent. He is also banned from using or encouraging others to use abusive, intimidating or threatening language or behaviour within the London Borough of Camden.

The court granted the order for a period of two years after hearing evidence of harassment and abuse against members of the public.

Commenting on the case, Cllr Jake Sumner, Executive Member for Community Safety at Camden Council said:

“It is a great shame that we had to resort to using ASBOs to protect the community against these young men, but their behaviour meant we had no choice but to take action.

“Camden Council and Camden Police work closely with the community to prevent crime and anti-social behaviour - investing in projects for young people, treatment to fight addictions and using enforcement such as ASBOs to protect the community and set boundaries of behaviour. I hope the residents living in these areas of Camden Town will have some long-awaited relief from the harassment of these young men. The ASBO also bans them from harassing anyone in the borough so it’s important that anyone with concerns tell the council or the police. The benefit of an ASBO is that it protects all residents - if the ASBO is breached we will take the case back to court to put a stop to any trouble as soon as possible. “
