The NASUWT aims to keep the BNP out of Welsh education

30 October 2009

The NASUWT, the largest teachers' union in Wales and the UK, is today proposing a motion at the Wales TUC Challenging Racism Conference that calls for members of the British National Party (BNP) and other far-right organisations to be banned from working in the education sector and serving on school governing bodies.

The Union is calling on the Wales TUC General Council to initiate talks with the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) to find a way to achieve this as part of the NASUWT's UK-wide campaign against the BNP.

Chris Keates, general secretary of the NASUWT, said:

"All right-minded people understand that an agenda of hatred, bigotry and intolerance has no place in education and our petition to ban the BNP from working as teachers and serving on governing bodies is attracting widespread support.

"The NASUWT has campaigned tirelessly for a number of years to have the teacher's contract changed to prevent the BNP from working as teachers.

"Such an amendment would bring the teacher's contract in line with the contracts of the police, the armed forces and prison service. If racists and fascists have no place in these services, then they have no place in schools."

Rex Philips, NASUWT Wales organiser, said:

"The role of a teacher and the role of a school governor is to contribute to securing an inclusive society, promoting community cohesion and achieving social justice for all.

"Wherever the BNP has a presence, it breeds and promotes intolerance, hatred and community fragmentation.

"With Westminster reviewing the activities of the BNP in the education service, the WAG needs to do likewise."
