Teaching must not be reduced to a toolkit of strategies, says ATL

15 May 2008

In response to the latest reports from The Primary Review, Dr Mary Bousted, general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL), said:

“Teaching and learning are highly complex processes and The Primary Review illustrates the range of professional skills a teacher must have. Children vary in their backgrounds and learning needs and teaching must reflect this.

“However, it is vital that teachers have time to learn and fully understand different ways of working, so that they can make informed professional judgements to benefit all of their pupils. Teaching must not be reduced to a toolkit of strategies to 'fix' children.”
