STREETS BECOME A LIVING ROOM FOR CAR FREE DAY

Three streets in the heart of London were free of cars for the day on Friday (22 September) to highlight how our daily transport choices affect the environment.

Despite the rain, Camden Council transformed Gate Street, New Turnstile and Little Turnstile in busy Holborn (WC1) into a giant outdoor living room with armchairs for people to relax in plus free live music, massages, entertainers and refreshments. There was also expert advice available on all aspects of car-free travel and walking to improve your health and fitness.

This year’s theme was climate change and how the daily decisions we all make affect it. Taking fewer car journeys - by walking, cycling or using public transport instead - can help reduce CO2 emissions that contribute to climate change. It also helps fight air pollution and improve the overall quality of life for people living in the city.

Camden Council has recently made significant improvements to the streets in this area to make them more attractive and accessible. This included refurbishing the pavements and road surfaces and putting in new lighting and cycle stands.
