Steve Doo, Professional Officer

The Professional Association of Teachers (PAT) regrets to announce the death of Steve Doo, Professional Officer, on 30 March 2007.

PAT General Secretary Philip Parkin said: “Everyone at PAT is devastated by the news.

“Steve was a highly valued friend and colleague. He was kind, thoughtful and a good listener. He had the ability to find well-thought out solutions to members’ problems and issues affecting PAT. He was an excellent ambassador for the Association when he represented us at meetings and events.

“Steve had been ill for some time but his death at the age of 49 was unexpected. Our thoughts, love and best wishes are with Steve’s family.”

Geoff Beadle, Chairman of PAT’s Tertiary Education Committee (TEC), said; “It was with great sadness that I learned of the untimely death of Steve Doo. I first came into contact with Steve when I joined TEC and worked more closely with him when I became Chairman.

“Steve made an immediate impact on me as a man of honesty and integrity and provided unstinting support for us in TEC. Without his help and support, the running of the Committee would have been much more difficult. We often relied on his guidance and knowledge, which he willingly gave. He was always willing to go the extra mile on behalf of both Committee and PAT members and his death is an enormous loss to all in the Association.

“On a personal basis, I will really miss his big cheerful self at our meetings and can only express on behalf of all TEC members our sincere condolences to all his family at the loss of so valuable a person.”

Born in London, Steve Doo attended Harrow County Grammar School before graduating with a BA in Art History and History from Nottingham University. After university, Steve worked in the Health Service and organised fund-raising for the establishment of the Stroke Unit at Nottingham General Hospital. He also became Midlands Appeals Co-ordinator for Scope. After working as a freelance fund-raiser, he trained as a teacher at Loughborough University, working at Burford Primary School in Nottinghamshire. He moved to Nottingham High School for Boys in 1992, where he served as a Year 3 teacher and Head of History in the Preparatory School, until he joined the staff at PAT in February 2002.

After joining PAT, Steve provided advice and support for members in all sectors of education, before specialising as PAT’s Tertiary Education Officer.

Steve Doo also served as a Councillor for Beeston Central and Deputy Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council in Nottinghamshire, as a director of Nottingham Playhouse and Chair of Governors at John Clifford Primary School in Beeston. He leaves four children.
