Squad UK announced for WorldSkills London 2011
17 November 2010
The members of Squad UK for WorldSkills London 2011 were announced today (Wednesday 17 November) by Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning minister John Hayes at the Association of Colleges Annual Conference in Birmingham.
The young people were chosen from a variety of backgrounds and from across the UK by UK Skills to form Squad UK. They will now spend the next year preparing to take on the very best from 50 nations during WorldSkills London 2011 which takes place from 5-8 October 2011 at ExCeL London.
The Squad members, all aged 18-24, were chosen by UK Skills after taking part in tough selection competitions which took place last month. The skills represented by Squad UK range from Electrical Installation, Mobile Robotics and Web Design to Cooking, Hairdressing and Landscape Gardening.
In entering the WorldSkills Competition, the UK is able to benchmark against and assess training standards from around the world, helping with the government's commitment to create an internationally competitive workforce here in the UK. With over 50 nations competing, 45 skills areas and an anticipated 150,000 visitors, WorldSkills London 2011 promises to empower people across the UK – opening their minds to the opportunities learning a skill can bring.
Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning minister John Hayes, said: "Vocational qualifications are essential to the government's commitment to securing a highly skilled and capable workforce which is internationally competitive.
"The young people competing in Squad UK are living proof of the standards of excellence found in our vocational learning programmes and are fine examples of the talented, dedicated and committed apprentices we have in this country.
"This is why the government has committed itself even further to workplace training with apprentices at its heart, and I wish every competitor the best of luck in the lead up to Worldskills London 2011."
Over the next twelve months, a full calendar of WorldSkills London 2011 events and activities all around the UK will showcase how skills shape our world – helping to shift public perceptions of workplace learning.
Edge, the independent education foundation, is the Premier Supporter of Squad UK. Brathay Trust, a charity that works with young people throughout the UK, is the Premier Partner for training and development of Squad UK. City & Guilds is the Premier Sponsor of WorldSkills London 2011.
