SMOOTH TRANSITION FOR CAMDEN’S GAMBLING PREMISES

Camden businesses can bet on the support of their council when it takes over gambling responsibilities next month.

On 1 September 2007 Camden Council will take over responsibilities from the magistrates’ court for a range of betting premises in the borough.

Camden’s licensing team have written to each of the existing gambling premises to remind them of the impending changes and how they need to respond.

The Council’s website has also been updated with information for residents and businesses, including forms to re-apply for a licence to run a gambling establishment under the Gambling Act 2005.

The Act gives local authorities new powers to licence gambling premises. This includes issuing premises licences for: casinos; bingo halls; betting offices and amusement arcades with gaming machines for adults. Camden Council will also be responsible for enforcing the Act.

There are 85 gambling premises in Camden that have had to re-apply for a licence, most of which are betting shops, plus a handful of amusement arcades and two existing casinos.

The Council also issues permits to around 160 small society lotteries a year, as well as permits for ‘one arm bandit’ machines in alcohol-licensed premises such as pubs.

Cllr Don Williams, Chair of Camden’s Licensing Committee, said:

“The Council has given businesses as much help and support as possible to ensure a smooth transition next month. However anyone who requires more information should not hesitate to contact our licensing team.”
