Commenting on this report, Kevin Hawkins, BRC Director General said:
"Clearly, shoplifting is a serious problem for retailers despite the huge investments the sector has made to prevent it. Worryingly, BRC's own retail crime survey shows the losses from customer theft are even more than £13 million and since 2000 the number of incidents has increased by nearly 50%. Also theft is only one of the problems retailers face on a day-to-day basis. Physical and verbal abuse against retail staff is also a growing concern along with vandalism and criminal damage.

"The BRC has recently launched the SCAR (Stop Crime Against Retail) campaign, where we will be ensuring the Government works with the sector to raise awareness of the real impact of crime and violence against retail and calling for Police to modify the system of crime reporting to encourage retailers to report all crimes."
