Camden Summer Dance Festival brings together the whole gamut of dance styles and steps to celebrate dance and its health benefits across the generations. Two shows, a matinee and evening performance, will bring together dance styles and talents from all over the world and borough.

The first show is called “Postcards From Around The World”. It’s a free performance inspired by ethnic music and dance and featuring folk dance groups and Camden Active Health Team’s dance students. Among the attractions are performances by Palestinian and South American folk dance groups as well as a range of styles including Chinese Fan Dance, Tango, Indian dance, Samba and belly-dancing.

The evening performance is an inter-generational collaboration called “Dancing Through Time”. Community-based dancers will join professional artists to present a show drawing on a range of dance styles. Charleston, Tap, Lindy Hop, Tango, Breakdance and Jazz will be among the array of styles on offer. Hip Hop dancers from Acland Burghley and the council’s Youth and Connexions Service will also perform.

Flick Rea, Executive Member for Culture, said: “I am delighted to see local people of all ages and backgrounds taking part in this celebration of dance. It is a positive culmination of all the courses and classes held throughout the borough all year. The festival will be a lively and colourful event showing that diversity can come together to form a whole of movement and music.”

Artistic Director and Dance Project Coordinator for The Camden Active Health Team, Rosaria Di Giovanni-Walker, added: “Dance is an excellent way to stay healthy and have fun. Many of our performers are enjoying their fifties and sixties and this showcase is a great way of highlighting the fitness, artistic and social benefits of dancing through life.

“This event is the culmination of all the hard work put in by our students across the borough. Yes dance helps with health and fitness, but it also improves balance and coordination. It is also a catalyst to unleash your creative side and meet new friends.”

Postcards From Around The World: 1.00-2.30pm on Thursday 29 June at UCL Bloomsbury Theatre, 15 Gordon Street, WC1. The performance is free. Members of the public should reserve a place by calling the theatre box office on: 020 7388 8822.

Dancing Through Time: 8.00 – 10.00pm on Thursday 29 June at UCL Bloomsbury Theatre, 15, Gordon Street, WC1. Tickets cost £5 (£3 concessions) also through the box office on 020 7388 8822. Both performances will be compered by contortionist Rubber Ritchie.
