Sending vending machines to the scrapheap will save lives, says BHF

13 October 2009

At the last minute, the UK Government has accepted the case for a full ban on cigarette vending machines in England, Wales and Northern Ireland¹. This has now been passed by MPs as part of the Health Bill.

In response Peter Hollins, Chief Executive at the British Heart Foundation, said:

"This is a victory for BHF campaigners who have argued so passionately that these machines must go to protect children's future heart health.

"Consigning vending machines to the scrapheap will cut off an easy supply of cigarettes to children. This policy must be carried out across the UK as soon as possible to stop the all-too-easy gateway to a lifetime addiction to cigarettes.

"The Government has made another brave move in the fight against ill health caused by tobacco. We look forward to all parties backing a new tobacco control strategy to help keep the Government's foot on the pedal on this crucial agenda."
