Scope comment on Electoral Commission's report on the administration of May 2011 referendum

19 October 2011

Richard Hawkes, Chief Executive of disability charity Scope, said: "We welcome the Electoral Commission's report. It builds on Scope's Polls Apart research, which shows there is room to improve the voting system and make it more usable for disabled people.

“In a modern democracy like Britain, disabled people's experiences of voting should not be subject to a postcode lottery.

"While most electoral administrators do their best to ensure that elections are accessible to disabled voters, we know there is a need for greater consistency in how elections are delivered.

"We strongly urge the government to build on the lessons learned from this year's referendum, where the powers to intervene to challenge poor services rested nationally with the Chief Counting Officer. They now need to consult with electoral staff, disabled people and local authorities and decide on the best way to make this happen."
