Royal seal of approval for timber frame stalwart

29 June 2010

Stewart Milne Group board director, Hugh Mackay, has been honoured for his career-spanning dedication to the promotion of timber frame construction with an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

With over 45 years of experience within the UK construction industry, Mr Mackay is widely regarded as being one of the forefathers of modern timber frame, and is credited with being a founding member of what is known today as the UK Timber Frame Association (UKTFA).

A past Chairman of both the UKTFA and the Timber Research and Development Association (TRADA), Mr Mackay, said he was humbled to have been bestowed the MBE, stating: "I am extremely proud and honoured to receive this award, but do so with great humility and accept it on behalf of all my colleagues in the industry with whom I have worked with over the years."

Since its formation when the Timber and Brick Association (TBA) merged with its Scottish equivalent to form the UKTFA, the association has gone from strength to strength - becoming the unified voice of the UK timber frame industry, and actively seeking to raise standards thoughout whilst promoting the overall awareness of the advantages of timber frame construction.

Current UKTFA chairman, Geoff Arnold, commented: "Members of the UKTFA, both past and present, are incredibly proud that Hugh has been honoured in this way. His contribution to the growth of our industry throughout his long and elustrious career has been immeasurable, and he continues to be a true inspiration as we strive to lead the way in construction innovation. We can think of no more fitting way to honour his career."

Mr Mackay has worked at Stewart Milne for the past 35 years, currently acting as a Main Board Director. He is also noted as being a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institute of Structural Engineers.

He added: "My greatest satisfaction has not only to have been part of the success of the Stewart Milne Group but to have contributed to the development of so many young people joining the industry who have become experts in their various trades and professions."
