Press Release
RNIB response to Dilnot report on funding of social care and support
8 July 2011
At RNIB we welcome the publication of the Dilnot report, as it is clear that our social care system is in need of urgent reform. We now want to see the Government publish a timetable for reform, reflecting the need to act swiftly. We also hope that they will listen to the voices of those with experience of the care system and organisations that represent them, to make sure that any plans going forward are both fair and sustainable.
At RNIB we believe that social care reform must:
- increase the support available to people, so that the system prevents long term dependency
- make sure that extra costs benefits for disabled people are not unfairly targeted to pay for growing social care bills
- ensure that individuals are clear on the extent of their personal responsibility to plan for future care needs, and that the Government accepts the responsibility it has for funding social care too.
We will study the detail with interest, but look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue with the Government.
