RETAILERS JOIN THE RACE TO REDUCE WASTE

26 July 2005

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has today put its weight behind a commitment to reduce the amount of packaging and food waste thrown away each year.

WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme), who are leading a number of major retailers on the scheme known as the Courtauld Commitment, today launched the programme with the overall aim to:

  • Design out packaging waste growth by 2008
  • Deliver absolute reductions in packaging waste by March 2010
  • Identify ways to tackle the problem of food waste

BRC Director General, Kevin Hawkins speaking at today's launch said: "The BRC welcomes this environmental initiative. Retailers recognise their responsibilities when it comes to the environment and will do what they can to help and engage.

"A number of top retailers have shown their support for this Commitment, which should really help to ensure WRAP's targets are achieved."
