RETAILERS BACK NEW JOINT ALCOHOL STANDARDS

18 November 2005

Retailers across Britain have today given their full backing to a new alcohol standards document, launched today by the Home Office, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and fifteen other trade associations within the drinks industry.

The BRC joined forces with Government to create the ‘Social Responsibility Standards for the Production and Sale of Alcoholic Drinks in the UK’ to highlight key issues for retailers selling alcohol.

BRC Director General, Kevin Hawkins, commented: “The BRC gives its full support to the Alcohol Standards Document launched today. Retailers recognise their responsibilities when it comes to selling alcohol and are already following the guidance laid down in the standards.

“Retailers have given huge resources to alcohol issues, recognising the need for strict policies on sales and working with the community to create a safe environment for all shoppers.

“We have recently formed the Alcohol Retailing Standards Group, a cross industry initiative to ensure a coordinated and consistent approach to tackling under age sales. The group will reinforce the commitment to the 'Challenge 21' principle and the 'No ID No Sale' message through the PASS scheme and will also strengthen staff training programmes as a priority.

“This Standards Document brings all these initiatives together and demonstrates our commitment as responsible businesses. This, combined with a Government led education campaign targeted at schools, parents, and other stakeholders, will help to bring about cultural change and tackle alcohol related problems".
