Press Release
RETAIL CRIME: HAZEL BLEARS TO STAND UP AND JOIN THE FIGHT
6 September 2005
Hazel Blears, Minister of State for the Home Office, has been confirmed as the keynote speaker at the British Retail Consortium’s (BRC) Annual Crime Survey Conference to be held in October.
As Minister of State for Policing, Security and Community Safety, Hazel Blears will be outlining the effect of the Government’s reform agenda on retail and the development of a specific national strategy for retail crime. The conference also sees the launch of the BRC’s 12th Annual Crime Survey, the most comprehensive report on the effects of retail crime on the industry.
BRC Director General, Kevin Hawkins, says: “We look forward to hearing the Minister outline how a new national strategy can be developed - retail crime is an ever-present issue and an endless drain for the industry.
“In 2003 retail crime cost the industry £2 billion and violence against retail staff soared. For this reason we will continue to ensure crime remains high on the BRC’s agenda of priorities as well as the Governments.”
The Crime Conference will be held on 21 October at Victoria Park Plaza. Other speakers at the conference include Chief Constable Bob Quick, Surrey Police; BRC Assistant Policy Director for Retail Crime, Nick James and House of Fraser Head of Loss Prevention, Jerry Carter.
