RESIDENTS GO COMPOST-CRAZY

10 May 2006

Composting-crazy residents learned how easy it is to reuse their organic waste at special workshops held in Camden on Saturday (6 May).

The event, run by Camden Council at Camley Street Natural Park, King’s Cross, marked the start of International Composting Week, which runs until 13 May 2006. In a special month-long offer from 7 May, Camden residents can get a free composting bin, made from recycled plastic, by calling 0845 130 6090. And with hot summer weather predicted and hose pipe bans already in place, green-fingered residents can also help save valuable water by using a water butt. All Camden households can buy a subsidised water butt kit for £34.95 by calling the same number.

Home composting can divert 200kg of waste from a householder’s rubbish each year, and residents in Camden are already ahead of the London average, collecting 396kg per resident in 2005. Gardeners reap the benefits too: adding compost to soil makes it easier to turn and work with, improving drainage and moisture balance, suppresses some plant diseases and replacing nutrients, all of which means plants grow more healthily.

Anna Coates, Assistant Policy and Projects Officer, Camden Council, says:

“Home composting is very simple, as everything from vegetable peelings and tea bags to vacuum cleaner dust and leaves can be added to your compost bin. Not only does compost add power to your flowers, but it can really help reduce the amount of waste which would otherwise be sent to landfill.”

For more information, come along to this summer’s community festivals throughout the borough, where Camden Council will run composting road shows. Alternatively, see the council’s website www.camden.gov.uk/recycling
