REAL PEOPLE, REAL VOTES, REAL DEMOCRACY

Camden Council is launching its new Use Your Vote campaign with real residents fronting the drive to maximise turnout and make sure they have a local say in their own local issues.

The campaign features three Camden residents who will be voting on 4 May. Redvers, who has just moved to Camden, Edna, who at 70 has been voting all her life, and Liza who will be voting for the first time. All of them are committed to having a say in Camden’s future.

A massive, high-visibility, poster presence will appear across the borough from 28 March. Bus stops, council buildings, including housing estate notice boards and libraries, and the sides of refuse vehicles will all drive home the message. The local papers will also include adverts featuring Redvers, Edna and Liza.

Redvers who moved here recently from Nottingham registered to vote straight away and says people have to turn out to vote if they want to see changes made. He said, “It’s important, people have to do their part. If they don’t go out to vote, nothing is going to change. People can’t complain that something needs to be done about an issue if they do not turn out.”

Edna a former nurse said, “This is a democratic country where we can have our say and be respected. We are living longer these days so we have a longer time to be affected by decisions! I ask tenants in my sheltered housing scheme ‘Do you think what’s going on is okay or not? Whatever your views, do something about it, so go out and vote.’”

Liza is 23 and will be voting for the first time. She said, “When it comes to a decision that is being made about me, I need to know who is in the driving seat. Voting affects my local decisions. For example in my block of flats there is no community spirit because people don’t stand up and make a difference. Things need to get done, but some people think ‘I’m only one person, my vote won’t count’. But it can. People have all sorts of excuses for not voting – it’s raining, they’re tired. But that doesn’t matter. If you don’t vote you can’t complain about the decision.”
Moira Gibb, Camden Council’s Chief Executive, said; “Whatever you do on 4 May – whether it’s going to work or to the gym, don’t miss out on voting for your local council.

“If you don’t vote, you will miss your chance to have your say on who runs the borough and the kind of services it delivers to you for the next four years. If you are aged 18 or over and eligible to do so, make sure you find the time to pop into your local polling station and have your say by voting.”
