RCP Comment on Tooke report

8 January 2008

Professor Ian Gilmore, President of the Royal College of Physicians,
said:

"We welcome the final report from Sir John Tooke, particularly its emphasis on promoting excellence and the importance of supporting academic careers. The recommendations, if implemented, will undo the inflexibility that caused difficulties for so many junior doctors, but are not likely to have a full impact for another two years, so it is vital that we support those caught in the transition period.

The virtually unanimous positive response by the medical profession to the report is unparalleled, and so we very much hope that the report is accepted by the Government and implemented without delay."
