Press Release

Prince Charles to visit Bombardier factory

16 February 2012

Unite, Britain's biggest union, has welcomed news that Prince Charles is to visit the Bombardier train factory in Derby to show his support for British manufacturing on 24 February.

Unite assistant general secretary, Diana Holland said: "We welcome Prince Charles' support for British manufacturing and British skills. This visit will be a great boost for the workforce who have had to endure a lot of uncertainty over the last 12 months.

"It would be nice if Prince Charles announced that the royal family wanted to commission a new royal train. Not only could it be used by the royal family but it could be used for the benefit of the nation. Clearly one train won't support the Bombardier factory in the long-term, but it will be a recognition of the skills of the workforce and their ability to build state-of-the-art trains.

"What is crucial is that Bombardier wins Crossrail. The government can not afford to repeat the mistakes it made over the Thameslink contract in future procurement decisions. We are not asking for favours, we are asking for fairness."
