Power giant's heavy hand against lake protesters

16 February 2007

There is growing concern about the heavy handed legal action which power giant RWE npower is taking to stifle protest against its plans to fill a popular, beautiful local lake with ash from Didcot power station in Oxfordshire.

Suit-wearing lawyers, escorted by security guards, are serving injunctions on people coming near the lake. Work on felling trees around Thrupp Lake started on Thursday, and passions are running high.

CPRE Oxfordshire had been hoping to organise a protest march this weekend, but is now unsure whether it can proceed. Its head of campaigns Andy Boddington said:

'npower are issuing injunctions against ordinary people who are angry, but not violent. They are treating people like they are terrorists but it is npower that is creating the climate of terror in Oxfordshire. They are trying to create stories about protestors to distract from the simple reality that there is no case for the destruction of Thrupp Lake. What npower are doing at Radley Lakes is legal but they are still trampling over the environment and the local community.'
