PILOT SCHEME TO TEST OUT NEW VISITORS’ PARKING PERMITS

20 September 2006

A pilot scheme introducing parking permits for visitors to residents south of the Euston Road, and extending permits for those visiting elderly or housebound residents across the borough has been agreed.

The decision was made at last night’s Camden Council Executive (Environment) Sub Group (19 September) meeting. The pilot scheme will start at the end of 2006 and will be run as a trial, with a review and survey carried out after a year to assess how well it works and decide its future1.

The pilot scheme will see the following visitors’ permits becoming available:

· 40 hours at 50p per hour per quarter per adult resident in the King’s Cross (CA-D) and Bloomsbury and Fitzrovia (CA-E) controlled parking zones

· 20 hours at 50p per hour per quarter per adult resident in the Holborn and Covent Garden (CA-C) controlled parking zone2

As in the rest of the borough, the permits will be valid for use only in residents’ bays, with a maximum four hourly stay per visit.

The council will also test out extending the amount of visitor permit hours allocated to housebound or elderly residents in the zones north of the Euston Road. This will increase from 30 to 40 hours per quarter in 2-hour zones and 120 hours to 150 hours per quarter in other zones, and the effects of this will be closely monitored.

Cllr Mike Greene, Executive Member for Environment, Camden Council said:

“Camden Council has listened to residents saying that they supported a visitor permit scheme south of Euston Road and we hope that testing it out as a pilot will help improve the parking system for them. We are initially introducing it as a trial so we can keep a close eye on how it goes. We want to help make the parking system in Camden, with its very busy roads, easier for residents and their visitors to use and understand.”
