PATIENTS OPEN NEW SWISS COTTAGE SURGERY

7 February 2006

A brand new doctors’ surgery was opened in Swiss Cottage yesterday (Monday, 6 February) - by two of its oldest patients.

Hanus and Mery Suchy, aged 92 and 83 respectively, were joined by doctors, staff, practice manager, John Orr, MBE, and Camden Council’s Executive Member for Culture, Cllr Phil Turner, in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open Swiss Cottage Surgery.

The practice has moved to its new home at Winchester Mews, on the site of the Swiss Cottage redevelopment, after it outgrew its old premises at 10 Compayne Gardens.

Compayne Gardens Surgery catered for its 6,000 patients using only two treatment and consulting rooms. The renamed Swiss Cottage Surgery has five modern treatment rooms, and will be able to treat between 8,000 and 10,000 patients much more comfortably.

A new GP, Dr Tsin Foong, has also joined the practice, enabling the surgery to offer greater access to its doctors. Nursing time will be increased and clinics, such as minor surgery and management of long-term conditions, will be developed further.

Practice manager John Orr said: “I’m very pleased to move into the new surgery. The old surgery building was just not big enough, and very cramped. The new surgery is a vast improvement and will enable us to provide a much better service to patients.”

Construction of the surgery is part of an £85m scheme that is providing leisure, cultural, community and learning facilities all on the one Swiss Cottage site. Under the terms of the Private Public Partnership (PPP) agreement with Camden Council, the development partners Barratt/Dawnay Day are providing the doctor’s surgery, leisure centre, community centre and social housing at no cost to the council.

Cllr Turner said: “This is another example of the fantastic community benefits that the deal Camden Council struck with the Swiss Cottage developers is bringing to the areas. With the opening of the surgery, the regeneration of Swiss Cottage has taken another step towards completion.”
