PAT WELCOMES SCHOOL FOOD REPORT

3 October 2005

The Professional Association of Teachers (PAT) has welcomed the publication of Turning the Tables: Transforming School Food and the DfES’s announcements on school meals today (3 October 2005).

PAT General Secretary Jean Gemmell said: “Practical lessons in cooking healthy and safe food would be of great benefit to pupils and prepare them to become independent and healthy adults. A good diet and good health go hand in hand.

“I’m sure that students would enjoy lessons that produce successful, edible results. In recent years, ‘Cookery’ has given way to Food Technology – important though that is – which has much more scientific content and less emphasis on producing attractive, tasty, healthy meals.

“Learning about food hygiene is also of great importance to prevent food poisoning and illness.

“We look forward to taking part in the Government’s consultation on this.”
