PAT WELCOMES GUIDANCE ON “CYBER-BULLYING”

25 July 2006

The Professional Association of Teachers (PAT) has welcomed new guidance from the DfES on “cyber-bullying”.

PAT General Secretary Philip Parkin said: “Bullying is not just about physically hurting others. Children and adults can be frightened or intimidated by threatening messages sent by mobiles or by e-mail, or published online.

“Cyber-bullying is an invasion of privacy from which it can be difficult to escape.

“Much cyber-bullying takes place outside school so the actions that schools can take are limited. It is therefore important that parents are involved too.

“These guidelines offer practical, common-sense ways to help parents, schools and pupils deal with ‘cyber-bullies’.”

At it 2005 Annual Conference, PAT members voted unanimously in favour of the motion “Conference deplores the use of the term ‘happy slapping’ to describe what is either assault or a glorified form of bullying, and calls on all in positions of power or influence to support schools in their attempts to stamp out bullying in all its forms.”
