PAT WELCOMES GTC REGISTRATION FOR ACADEMY TEACHERS

29 September 2005

The Professional Association of Teachers (PAT) has welcomed the announcement by Education Secretary Ruth Kelly that qualified teachers working in Academies will in future be registered with the General Teaching Council.

At PAT's Annual Conference in July, members voted in favour of the motion "Conference calls on the Government to make registration with the GTC mandatory for all qualified teachers." [http://www.pat.org.uk/index.cfm?param=content/conf05motions05.htm#I]

In February 2005, 11 national education organisations joined forces with the General Teaching Council for England to urge the DfES to make registration with the GTC mandatory for qualified teachers working in Academies: http://www.pat.org.uk/index.cfm?param=News/news_detail.cfm&id=773 .

PAT General Secretary Jean Gemmell said: "We are delighted that this loophole will be closed and teachers working in Academies will be brought within the scope of the GTCE’s professional standards and regulatory framework."
