PAT STATEMENT ON RESIGNATION OF EDUCATION MINISTER PETER PEACOCK

14 November 2006

PAT (Scotland) has given its reaction to the resignation due to ill health of Minister for Education and Young People Peter Peacock.

Commenting on behalf of the Professional Association of Teachers, PAT Professional Officer (Scotland) Jim O'Neill said: "We are sorry that Peter Peacock is stepping down and would like to wish him a speedy return to good health.

"He was a supportive, proactive and committed minister who achieved a great deal for education and young people in Scotland. We didn’t always agree with his policies, but have to acknowledge his commitment to education, his support for all school staff and his recognition of the successes within Scottish education.

"We also wish his successor well. The new Minister will face a number of challenges, including maintaining the momentum generated by the outgoing Minister in so many fields."
