PAT STATEMENT ON FOSTER REVIEW AND FE FUNDING GAP

16 November 2005

The Professional Association of Teachers (PAT) has welcomed the report of the Foster Review of further education and news that Education Secretary Ruth Kelly is to address the funding gap between schools and FE colleges.

PAT Professional Officer (Tertiary Education) Steve Doo said: “We welcome the Foster Review. We are pleased that the Report highlights the key role further education colleges have in post-16 education and their fundamental importance to the economy.

"The Report raises some of the problems colleges face, but these are largely due to under-funding at at time of increased expectations. We are therefore pleased that the Education Secretary is to announce a reduction in the funding gap between schools and FE colleges. PAT has been pressing the Government to tackle this unfair disparity in funding.

"The reduced gap of eight percent is still too high, but at least this is a start and shows that the Government is at last listening to the FE sector and considering how its needs can be addressed.

"We will study the Foster Review in detail and make a full response in due course."
