PAT SCOTLAND WELCOMES CHARTERED TEACHER REVIEW

PAT (Scotland) has welcomed the review of Scotland's Chartered Teacher programme announced by Education Minister Hugh Henry on 1 December 2006.

Commenting on behalf of the Professional Association of Teachers (PAT), Jim O'Neill, Professional Officer (Scotland), said: “There is certainly a need for the scheme to be revisited because, as it is set up now, it does not appear to be delivering the intended results.

“We’re sure that the Minister and his officials must be extremely disappointed in the number of teachers willing to go down this career route. They need to find out the reasons for this. Is it the cost to each individual? Is it the perceived lack of status in being a Chartered Teacher?

“The review should look at all aspects of the scheme with the opportunity to suggest where things can be improved.”
