PAT SCOTLAND CONCERNED THAT FEWER SCOTS APPLYING TO UNIVERSITY

19 October 2005

PAT Scotland, the Scottish section of the independent union the Professional Association of Teachers (PAT), has expressed its concern about the latest figures from UCAS which show that the number of Scots applying to attend university in Scotland has fallen.

PAT Professional Officer (Scotland ) Jim O'Neill said: "No matter how you look at it, or what slant is put on it, the news that fewer young Scots are applying to go to university is both disappointing and worrying.

"One of Scotland's greatest strengths is the talent of its young people.

"For its future, Scotland needs the best of that talent to both study and then stay in the country."
