PAT SCOTLAND CONCERNED BY STUDENT DEBT

14 July 2005

PAT Scotland, the Scottish section of the independent union the Professional Association of Teachers (PAT), has expressed its concern about the levels of student and graduate debt, following the publication of a report by the Association of Graduate Recruiters on graduate earnings.

Blanka Peters, a primary school teacher from Edinburgh, and Chair of PAT's Scottish Executive Committee, said: "We are very concerned about the escalation of student debt and the pressure this places on students and graduates.

"Why should this commitment to education by our young people be an opportunity for raising the vast profits of the banks?

"Education is for the future. What students are given in training and development they are able to put back into society, the community and the economy. This millstone of debt is outrageous. Education should not become available only to those who are able to support themselves.

"When they acquired their education and training, the politicians who introduced these laws for students did not have this burden of debt that they have so effectively loaded onto young people in our society."
