Overseas doctors need support not blame says MDU

16 September 2011

A supportive environment is essential to help doctors who are new to the UK health sector assimilate believes the MDU, as it welcomes the GMC's recommendation for an induction programme for all doctors entering UK practice in its first report into the state of medical education and training.

MDU medico-legal adviser, Dr Emma Cuzner said:

“Patient safety incidents are devastating for everyone involved, from the patient to the doctor who is overseeing their treatment but few are wholly due to individual error. More often than not, there are a number of contributory factors, from the hectic environment in which doctors are working, to a breakdown in communication between colleagues. For this reason, the MDU strongly believes the response to incidents should emphasise the need to improve systems or protocols, rather than directing inappropriate blame at individuals. We are pleased that the GMC recognises this important point.

“Much of the GMC's report accords with the MDU's own experience. For example, that poor communication is one of the main causes of patient complaints and that doctors need to be supported when raising concerns about their working environment or their colleagues. As the GMC says, addressing these issues is the responsibility of individual doctors, employers, those delivering medical education and the GMC itself. The MDU agrees that providing the right support structure is the best means of helping doctors adjust to the demands of UK practice. We already support our members through our 24-hour medico-legal advice line, as well as by providing courses to help them enhance their communication skills. We look forward to working with the GMC on behalf of our members and to taking part in the wider debate that today's report will generate.”
