Press Release

ONE REPRESENTATIVE BODY FOR SCHOOL GOVERNORS THE NATIONAL GOVERNORS’ ASSOCIATION

15 November 2005

John Adams and Neil Davies respective Chairs of the National Association of School Governors (NASG) and the National Governors’ Council (NGC) are delighted to announce that following the vote by NGC members at their AGM on Saturday 12 November 2005, the two organisations are to merge. (NASG members voted in favour of the merger at their AGM on 22 October.)

The merger will mean that school governors, governing bodies and local governor associations will now be represented by one national body – The National Governors’ Association.

Negotiations between the two Boards commenced in January 2005 culminating in the recent votes by the members of the two organisations.

Commenting on the decision Neil Davies said: “This is good news not only for NGC and NASG but for school governance in general. I firmly believe that one strong national organisation will be more effective in representing the views and interests of school governors. Onwards and upwards the National Governors’ Association (NGA).”

John Adams said: “I am delighted that Members of NASG and NGC have voted overwhelmingly in favour of the merger. We welcome the challenges that the integration of the two organisations will bring. The NGA will harness the strengths of its two founder bodies and will provide a stronger and more focused representational and support organisation for governors.”

Notes

  1. The new organisation which will be called the National Governors’ Association will come into existence on 1 January 2006.
NGA’s purpose is to be the national voice of governing bodies and to enhance the opportunities for governors to play their part in promoting the best possible education for all pupils in an environment that promotes their well being. NGA aims to achieve this by providing a quality service to its members by keeping governors informed, by representing the governor view, and by campaigning on behalf of governors.
  2. The National Governors’ Council was founded in 1994. It seeks to represent the views of all governors of maintained schools in England at national level. The membership of NGC comprises of independent local associations in Local Authority areas. The associations represent the views of individual school governing bodies at the local level, supported by NGC in the national arena.
  3. The National Association of School Governors was founded (as NAGM) in 1970 to support, inform and represent school governors. Membership consists of individual school governing bodies, individual governors and some large corporations who support their employees undertaking voluntary work. The Association’s journal Governors’ News is distributed to some 40,000 school governors throughout the country.
  4. Issued on behalf of both organisations by the National Governors’ Council.
