Older People Help To Shape Council’s Vision For The Future

OLDER people in Camden are playing a vital role in ensuring the Council offers the best possible services and support to residents as they grow older.

More than 200 people attended a recent conference to learn about the key findings of a consultation into the Council’s vision for older people for the next five years (1).

The key findings include:
· Information – older people want to know what’s happening, the services available to them and contact information.
· Transport – safe, reliable and accessible transport needs to be available to enable older people to take part in activities and other opportunities.

The Quality of Life Strategy for Camden’s Older Citizens was launched in 2002 and identified priorities for Camden Council and its partners until 2007. This has now expired and the Council is currently working on developing a new plan.

The consultation was held with older people between November 2007 and February 2008 and is helping to shape the Council’s next five year older people’s strategy - A Borough of Opportunities for Older Citizens.

The conference, held at Haverstock School, involved several workshops including employment and planning for retirement, education, falls prevention and planning housing and support for the future.

Discussions held in the workshops, along with the other consultation feedback, will now be used to help shape the new strategy which is due to be finalised by the end of the summer.

Cllr Martin Davies, Camden Council’s Executive Member for Adult Social Care, said:

“We want Camden to be a borough that offers the best opportunities for people as they grow older. This includes feeling involved and part of their community, supported when they need it and as healthy and happy as possible.

“It’s great that so many of our older residents have taken part in our consultation and are helping to shape the council’s vision for future older people.”

Brigit Panet, who responded to the consultation, said:
